I'm dismayed to read so many pundits criticize Elizabeth Edwards for wanting her husband to continue his run for President. Evidently they believe John and Elizabeth should hole up somewhere and wait for her to die.
If this makes you angry I want you to read this email that Andrew Sullivan posted from a reader of his blog, the Daily Dish. The reader's wife died of cancer three years ago and he recounts how his wife dealt with her cancer. Here's the key:
"If I found out today that I had a year to live, and that meant I would change the way I spend my days, then I need to change the way I spend my days now. It is my hope that having someone in the public eye being so open, brave, and grateful for the blessing of this day might cause many other people to examine their lives as well." [emphasis mine]
Some pundits claim Edwards is going to get a lot of sympathy votes in response to Elizabeth's cancer. No doubt, but they will be more than offset by voters who don't want to bothered by the grim news of Elizabeth's struggle or who think that those with incurable illnesses should not be in the public view.
