Last night’s announcement that brand name breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure would put an end to its long time partnership with women’s health resource Planned Parenthood nearly broke the Internet. Twitter faltered—then erupted in vitriol against the purveyors of pink.
Rep. Jackie Speier (she of the most amazing pro-choice speech ever delivered on the House floor) said it clearly: “Komen’s decision hurts women — it puts politics before women’s health. @komenforthecure should be ashamed.”
Beloved writer Judy Blume tweeted: “Susan Komen would not give in to bullying or fear. Too bad the organization bearing her name did.”
Why did they do it? Probably because of Komen's new Senior Vice President for Public Policy, Karen Handel, who is described as strongly "pro-life." Here is a snipit from her campaign blog back when she was running for governor of Georgia:
"I will be a pro-life governor who will work tirelessly to promote a culture of life in Georgia…. I believe that each and every unborn child has inherent dignity, that every abortion is a tragedy, and that government has a role, along with the faith community, in encouraging women to choose life in even the most difficult of circumstances…. since I am pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.
Bullshit! Abortion is just a small part of what Planned Parenthood does and these pro-lifers know it. Anyone who is truly pro-life and concerned with breast cancer would continue funding Planned Parenthood, but we know that politics is much more important to the right than protecting women from death.
So avoid the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation and all those products that support the foundation with pink ribbons and their product wrapped in pink printing. Give to directly to Planned Parenthood instead. I just did.
